In the UK the term “ironmongery” has been around for hundreds of years. Originally it referred to iron goods such as tools, nails and hinges.
Although the UK and US may be similar in many ways, including using English as their primary language, there are some words that differ. Ironmongery and hardware are 2 such words, while ironmongery is predominantly a UK term, hardware is the US equivalent. In movies and TV shows, you may have heard the term “hardware store”. Both terms refer to locks, hinges and door handles or other metal items used in the construction of a home for doors and windows.
In the UK the term “ironmongery” has been around for hundreds of years. Originally it referred to iron goods such as tools, nails and hinges. As the construction trade developed and new technologies were invented, ironmongery included a wider range of metal products. All ironmongery items relate to the fixings that secure doors, windows or any opening into a property.
The US uses the term “hardware” to describe a broader range of items and even include things made from plastic, wood and other material. While ironmongery in the UK only refers to fittings for doors and windows, hardware can also include items used for plumbing, power tools and electrical components.
The tradition of ironmongery in the UK was always one of craftsmanship and an eye for detail. A high-quality service or product that you would commission from local tradesmen. Metal being a hard and robust material ensured a quality product that would last for hundreds of years of use. Throughout the UK, you can find historical buildings adorned with iron fittings that were hand-crafted to fit the property and design, still being used to this day. On the other hand, hardware refers more to everyday use or DIY. A hardware store is usually for retail customers rather than experienced tradespeople.
Despite the advancements in technology we still keep the ironmongery legacy for quality and excellence alive. With hundreds of years of history, we are proud to be long-standing ironmongers working with the skilled craftsmen and women of today.
